Dress to Skirt
..
Have you ever held onto a cute dress that doesn't fit anymore, just because...well, it's just too cute to get rid of? Yep, that's me! I have such a hard time getting rid of some things and in this case, the cute, blue, puffy, fun to twirl in girls dress was one of them. Thank goodness too because my daughter was picked to be a towns mother in her Christmas dance performance that required for her to wear a Victorian dress. I thought I would be able to find a Victorian dress somewhere, but boy was I wrong! I couldn't find one anywhere that was less than $100 and I was not going to pay that much for a dress that my daughter was going to wear 2 times! After weeks of not finding anything I began brainstorming on how I could create a Victorian dress. I was in Goodwill and saw a cute, long skirt. I thought, hmm, this could work but it wasn't flowy and right then and there is when a light bulb flashed on...just like in the cartoons! :) I instantly thought about how I love the silky fabric of the blue dress that I had and how it flowed when my daughter would twirl in it. Why couldn't I turn that into a skirt? I can and I will!! I was so relieved and excited at the same time!! As I walked towards the shirt section to look at tops, out of no where was this really cute black, lace top just hanging in the middle of the rack all by itself! I was drawn to it immediately and grabbed at it like 5 other people were trying to get it as well. Hahaha. I looked at the tag and it was my daughter's size exactly! How perfect...and it was only $2.99 (With a brand new retail tag of $29.99)! Couldn't beat that! I was beaming like sunshine!! To complete the look I bought black lace flowers to sew on the bottom of the skirt to match the black lace top. Here is the completed look! I was asked by several ladies where I bought my daughter's Victorian dress...now that's a compliment! :)
Kids Summer Tie-Dye
On a nice, hot day we went to our nearby water park and placed our towels on the lawn near another family while we went to have some fun. When we went back to take a little break, we realized that the other family had the same towel as us and we couldn't figure out which towel was ours and vice versa. This lead me into thinking, why don't we tie-dye our own towels so we don't have that situation again, and that is exactly what we did!!!
We went and found 2 basic white towels. We found ours at Walmart and they had a bunch of different colored stitching. My daughter found purple stitching and my son found blue. We than grabbed tie-dye colors that both the kiddos could agree on and a bag of rubber bands. We than hurried home with excitement and got the imaginations flowing. :)
Things you need:
Towel(s)
tie-dye colors
rubber bands
gloves (optional)
First you will want to grab little bunches of the towel and tie with the rubber bands. Be creative, you can do big bunches, little bunches, twists, whatever you feel like doing and however many bunches you want. My little miss decided that she was going to draw out a flower before starting the rubber band process. This is your towel, so make it yours. :) After tying the rubber bands, you will begin your tie-dye process. Follow the instructions on the box. We let the towels soak for the rest of the day and over night, which was hard for my kiddos because they were so excited to see what they had created but it made for a great start for the next day as they both woke up with excitement and anticipation! We got outside and my kiddos began to take off all the rubber bands. I think it took less than a couple minutes. Lol! They moved so quickly! As they held up their own towel, their eyes were filled with so much joy and amazement of what they had created. I took each towel and rinsed off all the excess dye until I couldn't see any color in the water anymore. I than washed them in hot water and dried them as I would normally. My kiddos now have their own unique towel that they can take to public outings with the confidence of knowing that there won't be one exactly like theirs. Now it's your turn! Have fun!!! :)

Awesome!! Such a cute idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! Cute beach towels can be so expensive. And making a bit of a mess outside is always fun!
